Hundreds of shoppers rushed into Lincoln city centre this morning as it burst back into life with shops reopening for the first time in months.
As the county progresses into the second phase of Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s lockdown exit plan, businesses such as hairdressers, gyms, beauty salons and all non-essential shops have been legally allowed to reopen today, Monday, April 12.
One shop which appeared particularly popular was Primark – with the company not offering online shopping, people have been unable to get their hands on items from the High Street favourite since it closed in early January.
Lincolnshire Live visited Primark Lincoln to see how busy it was on it’s reopening morning and what safety measures it has in place.
Joining the queue at just after 9.45am, it seemed to move relatively quickly and people weren’t waiting outside for too long, although the queue did grow as the day went on.
There were several members of staff manning the queue, directing people to where they needed to wait and reminding them to remain socially distanced.
Once at the shop entrance, a member of staff directed me towards which of the two doors to enter through – meaning two customers at once are able to sanitise their hands and grab a basket.
The queuing system seemed efficient and I was inside the shop by 10am.
When inside, there were regular tannoy announcements reminding shoppers to wear a mask, keep a distance and use the hand sanitiser which was widely available in the shop.
Inside the shop was busy, but not ridiculous. Not many people were sticking to social distancing guidelines.
Staff on the shop floor were more than happy to help with enquiries despite seeming busy.
The store was well stocked with plenty of new season clothing, although a member of staff did say the store had sold over 450 items from the new pastel loungewear collection, which went viral on social media platform Tik Tok over the weekend.
However, the shop is set to receive daily deliveries of its best sellers.
Queuing at the tills was also efficient, with a number of staff members manning this queue and directing customers to tills.
There were over 10 tills open on the ground floor, all with screens in between to keep both staff and customers safe.
The shop has extended its opening hours for reopening, and is now open to shoppers from 8am until 9pm, Monday to Saturday.
It will also open half-an-hour later on a Sunday with open times of 10:30am to 5pm.
Opening hours for other big name shops in Lincoln, including Debenhams, New Look and JD Sports can be found here.
