Musicals Week got off to a great start on Saturday’s Strictly Come Dancing with a group dance from Cabaret and the dancers poised to step into theatre mode.
But this week one star of Strictly almost stepped into a whole new role.
Presenter Tess Daly attracted a little bit of criticism online when she slightly stepped on the toes of the judges and decided to critique one of the celebrity dancers.
Following Rhys Stephenson’s Jive with partner Nancy Xu, the pair stepped forrward for their judges comments but Tess offered up hers first, telling Rhys “there was a little mistake there.”
The judges gave Rhys mostly positive feedback, congratulating him on a fantastic performance, though Anton du Beke commented on a lack of control in his leg work.
But despite some great feedback and good scores, fans of the show weren’t happy with Tess’ comment, taking to Twitter in their droves to discuss her feedback.
Twitter user @Nurseyjo said: “Since when has Tess Daly been a judge on #strictly? Totally inappropriate for her to comment on @RhysStephenson1 and @Nancy_xuxi in that fashion. That’s what the judges are paid for.”
While @Angelasoapfan tweeted “@tessdaly @bbcstrictly you are a judge now are you? Unfair to point out Rhys mistake”
And @mrscarter22 wrote: “I’m not impressed that @TessDaly immediately said that Rhys had made a mistake. That’s her opinion. She’s not a judge”
Another Twitter user, @jaymarfo12 tweeted: “Ah, didn’t know Tess was sitting in for Craig tonight? Please can you let the judges point out any mistakes. Thank you #Strictly.”
Despite Tess picking up on their possible mistake, Rhys and Nancy seemed to bounce back from any criticism and Saturday’s show saw all couple’s perform well, without too much drama despite the theatrical theme.
