Eating 50 chicken wings sounds pretty easy, right? Lincolnshire Live sent reporter Gurjeet Nanrah to attempt the new challenge on offer at a city pub.
As I sat down at my table, I was convinced that if I did fail, there would only be a handful of wings left on my plate.
But as soon as two plates – each with a mound of 50 chicken wings – arrived, my confidence quickly dwindled.
The Mailbox pub in Guildhall Street, Lincoln, is offering customers the chance to have a portrait on its ‘Wing Wall of Fame’ if you can eat 50 chicken wings as quickly as you can.
A vegetarian and vegan-friendly option of cauliflower wings is also available if chicken doesn’t take your fancy and for only £12.50, you’re sure to get money’s worth of wings regardless of how many you eat.
The offer is available every Wednesday, but my feeble effort is perhaps better displayed on a lavatory Wall of Shame than anywhere else.
I powered through my first eight wings, but soon felt the meat fatigue begin to settle in. you know, the feeling where you know your stomach is working too hard to just digest anything.
But I still soldiered through and doubled the total number of wings I had eaten before the end was well and truly in sight.
In just under 19 minutes, I managed to eat a pretty abysmal total of 16 wings – a total many of you would rightly think you could beat by some margin.
Pace is definitely the key to standing a chance in this challenge. Once you start eating, don’t stop until you really have to.
I would also advise to keep drinking water throughout. Anything heavier like a pint or in my case, a soft drink, is going to really inhibit your ability to power through these wings.
They are delicious and sauces are available to help you make your way through them. however, I personally feel I overindulged to truly savour the flavour of the meat.
The 50 wings are priced at 25p each at £12.50 and if that isn’t enough of a challenge, you can upgrade for £2.50 to the Mailbox’s ‘Angry Wings’ at £15.00.
From here, you can choose from either wings covered in blue cheese sauce, Frank’s RedHot sauce, or coated in crumbled Stilton for some extra flavour in the same challenge.
The wings challenge launched on May 26 and take place every week on a Wednesday at the popular Lincoln pub.
Lizzi Ransom, part of the management team at The Mailbox, Lincoln, said: “The hope is that it can bring some people in. Our wing Wednesdays have been running for a couple of years now, and we are known as a brand for offering that. But this is something different.
“It’s a challenge between friends or family to see who can eat 50 wings the quickest and we think it will be popular with those who already like our wings.”
Let’s be clear – as poor as my attempt may seem – this is no easy challenge.
My claim of being a serious eater was rightly stripped away from me as I left The Mailbox, but this is definitely a challenge reserved for those who go back for seconds and thirds.
You can try it out yourself and attempt to outdo my total – but then again, it is hardy a lofty challenge to eat less than 20 wings at more than a minute per wing.
Here’s to hoping I make it at least halfway through next time, although I’m unlikely to be eating chicken wings any time soon.
