Pint of Science Event: Animal Tales

Mischievous birds in medieval miracle stories
Dr Hope Williard (Academic Subject Librarian & Associate Lecturer)
To inspire and entertain, medieval Christians wrote, read, and told stories about the saints – holy people who had led exemplary lives. This talk will discuss what these stories can tell us about animals in medieval European culture, focusing particularly on three biographies from France and England in which mischievous birds play an important role.

From giant sperm to peacock tails: The mating game
Dr Carl Soulsbury (Associate Professor)
Competing to reproduce is one of the most important evolutionary forces, but how does it shape animals? We will explore how competition to mate has led to some of the most bizarre animal traits: from the world’s longest sperm to the highest pitched calls, from the blackest of blacks to careful optical illusions. We will discover how animals play the mating game.
